EUROPESERVICING 2006
DIRECTOR'S CUT: SESSION 4

'Being There'

Being There is the story about Chance, a simple gardener who grew up living as an employee in the home of a wealthy man with virtually no contact or social interaction with the outside world.

Captive or in-house servicers, hmm . . . maybe we should quit while we’re ahead here!

Chance’s cultural and social education comes entirely from what he watches on the television provided by his employer. When his employer dies, Chance is set off into the real world where he becomes involved in a car accident with a wealthy and powerful businessman. His simplistic, TV-informed utterances are mistaken as a profound source of deep wisdom and he quickly rises to national public prominence. He is noted for repeating to famous people, "All is well…and all will be well…in the garden," which is interpreted as an uplifting economic and political comment.

Of course we all know that all is well, and will be well, in the back office. We also know that no captive servicer has ever been involved in a metaphoric car or train wreck, for that matter.

Throughout the film you see actual television clips as part of the ambient visual and audio background. It reminds of the "din" of large conferences and parties during which few are listened to onstage, yet rumours from bars and exhibition halls are repeated as profound wisdom throughout the industry.

The "director's cut" or "notes" were written by EuropeServicing's chief architect and host, Toni Moss, CEO of EuroCatalyst. Because the event is being held at the famous 195 Piccadilly, the home of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, EuroCatalyst has chosen to use movie titles to theme each session. While some see films as entertainment, others recognise the art of cinema as a record of the human condition. EuroCatalyst chose titles and short clips of films to theme and inspire discussion as we bring the triumph and struggles of the European servicing sector to life over the course of the two-day EuropeServicing event. Even if you have not seen any of the films mentioned, the simple titles should tell you everything you need to know. Moss and her guest hosts look forward to interviewing the lineup of panellists who represent the best that the European servicing industry has to offer, and hope to change your perspectives about the role and importance of servicing as the stage upon which the European mortgage industry is set.
